Extraordinary destinations, unforgettable experiences and the journeys that create memories to last a lifetime.

There comes a point when you start thinking differently about travel.
Perhaps it’s somewhere you’ve always dreamed of visiting. A place you’ve seen in photographs, watched in documentaries or promised yourself you’d experience one day.
Watching the sunrise over the Taj Mahal. Seeing a tiger in the wild. Standing among the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu. Exploring the extraordinary landscapes of the Canadian Rockies. Or coming face to face with wildlife on an African safari.
For me, travel has increasingly become about those moments.
Don’t get me wrong. I love a beautiful beach, an exceptional hotel and the opportunity to switch off for a couple of weeks. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.
But I also believe there’s something incredibly rewarding about discovering a destination, understanding its culture, meeting its people and experiencing things you’ll remember for the rest of your life.
And that’s why I think escorted touring deserves a much closer look.
Escorted Touring Isn’t What Everyone Thinks It Is
Mention an escorted tour and some people immediately picture a coach full of strangers, rigid schedules and being told where to go every minute of the day.
I understand that perception. In fact, if I’m being completely open, I’m somebody who naturally gravitates towards privately arranged travel myself.
I like flexibility. I like choosing where I stay. And I like having the freedom to explore at my own pace.
But that doesn’t mean escorted touring isn’t an excellent way to experience the world.
Quite the opposite.
A thoughtfully designed escorted tour brings together an itinerary, accommodation, transport, sightseeing and knowledgeable guides, with much of the organisation taken care of before you even leave home.
Instead of spending hours researching how to travel between destinations, which attractions to prioritise or how to arrange excursions, you can concentrate on enjoying the journey.
And although you’re travelling as part of a group, that doesn’t necessarily mean spending every waking moment together.
Different tours offer different levels of free time and flexibility, and finding the right balance is an important part of choosing the right holiday.
For some people, the companionship is one of the biggest attractions. For others, it’s simply the reassurance of having everything organised.
Neither approach is wrong.
The Secret to a Great Journey? Don’t Try to See Everything
I learnt this lesson from personal experience.
For my 40th birthday, I travelled to South Africa. To this day, it remains one of the most incredible holidays I’ve ever taken.
We had nine nights to explore Cape Town, Hermanus, Franschhoek and part of the Garden Route, staying in some beautiful properties along the way.
On paper, it looked fantastic.
In reality, we’d tried to squeeze too much into too little time.
We arrived in Cape Town halfway through our first day, leaving just one full day to explore. Table Mountain was extraordinary, but we never made it to Boulders Beach or the Cape of Good Hope.
In Hermanus, we enjoyed an incredible marine excursion, but barely had time to discover the town itself.
And in Franschhoek, we found ourselves rushing between experiences when we should have been slowing down and enjoying one of South Africa’s most beautiful wine regions.
Would I change that holiday? Absolutely not. The memories are priceless.
But would I plan it differently today? Without question.
I’d allow more time in the places that deserved it, be more selective about the stops and build the itinerary around what mattered most.
That experience reinforced something I now believe very strongly.
A great journey isn’t about how many destinations you can fit into an itinerary. It’s about how much you actually experience when you’re there.
And that’s where a well-designed escorted tour can make an enormous difference.
Why an Escorted Tour Can Be Such a Good Choice
Some destinations are relatively straightforward to explore independently.
Others involve considerable distances, unfamiliar transport systems, multiple regions or experiences that benefit enormously from local knowledge.
India, Japan, Costa Rica and South Africa are all wonderful examples of destinations where having the right itinerary and expert guidance can enhance the experience.
A good escorted tour isn’t simply about transporting people between attractions.
It’s about creating a journey that makes sense.
Knowing how long to spend somewhere. Understanding which experiences work well together. Allowing for travelling time. And making sure the itinerary delivers what people actually came to see.
There’s also something to be said for sharing those experiences with like-minded travellers.
Imagine returning from an early morning safari after seeing elephants, lions or rhinos in their natural habitat, and sharing the excitement with people who’ve just experienced exactly the same thing.
Those shared moments can become part of the holiday itself.
Of course, group travel won’t suit absolutely everyone. That’s why it’s important to choose the right tour, the right pace and the right style of experience.
Travelling Solo Doesn’t Have to Mean Exploring Alone
One of the areas where I think escorted touring really comes into its own is solo travel.
There are countless reasons somebody might want to travel independently.
Perhaps their partner doesn’t share the same interests. Perhaps they’re single, widowed or simply at a stage in life where they want to start exploring more of the world.
Whatever the reason, nobody should feel they have to put their travel ambitions on hold because they don’t have somebody to go with.
An escorted tour can provide a wonderful balance.
You can book as an individual, enjoy the companionship of fellow travellers and have the reassurance of an organised itinerary and experienced support throughout the journey.
You might make lifelong friends. You might simply enjoy having people around you during excursions and meals.
And you can still appreciate time to yourself when the itinerary allows.
Our preferred touring partner, Newmarket Holidays, offers dedicated solo departures as well as selected tours with opportunities for solo travellers to join wider groups.
It’s a fantastic way to experience destinations that might otherwise feel daunting to organise alone.
You may be booking the holiday solo, but that doesn’t mean you have to experience the world alone.
Five Extraordinary Destinations Worth Discovering
The beauty of escorted touring is the sheer variety of experiences available.
From wildlife encounters and cultural discoveries to spectacular scenery and iconic rail journeys, there’s far more choice than many people realise.
Here are five destinations I believe deserve particular consideration.
India — Culture, Wildlife and Unforgettable Contrasts
India is one of those destinations that can leave a lasting impression.
The extraordinary architecture of the Taj Mahal, the colourful streets of Rajasthan, magnificent palaces, bustling cities and the opportunity to search for Bengal tigers in their natural habitat.
It’s a country of incredible contrasts, and one where knowledgeable local guides can add enormous depth to the experience.
Newmarket Holidays has a long-established touring presence in India, with itineraries combining some of the country’s most celebrated cultural highlights and wildlife experiences.
For travellers who have always dreamed of seeing the Taj Mahal or encountering tigers in the wild, it’s an excellent place to begin exploring escorted touring.
Japan — An Extraordinary Blend of Tradition and Modern Life
Japan continues to attract enormous interest, and it’s easy to understand why.
Few destinations combine centuries-old traditions with contemporary life quite so effortlessly.
From the energy of Tokyo and the temples of Kyoto to Mount Fuji, beautiful gardens and extraordinary food, Japan offers a remarkable variety of experiences.
It’s also a destination where itinerary design really matters.
Choosing the right route, understanding travel times and deciding which experiences to include can make a significant difference to the holiday.
For those who would prefer the arrangements to be organised in advance, escorted touring offers an appealing way to discover Japan’s many highlights.
Costa Rica — Wildlife, Rainforests and Natural Wonders
Costa Rica is one of my favourite suggestions for travellers who want something beyond a conventional beach holiday.
Think lush rainforests, dramatic volcanoes, waterfalls, cloud forests and extraordinary wildlife.
Sloths, monkeys, toucans and an incredible variety of birdlife are among the attractions that make this destination so special.
But Costa Rica is also a country where travelling between different regions is an important part of the experience.
A thoughtfully planned itinerary can bring together its contrasting landscapes without leaving travellers to manage every transfer and excursion independently.
For nature lovers, it’s a genuinely exciting touring destination.
South Africa — The Magic of Safari
South Africa will always have a special place in my heart.
There’s something extraordinary about experiencing wildlife in its natural environment.
Watching elephants move through the bush, spotting rhinos on a game drive or heading out in the early morning light in search of lions are experiences that stay with you.
And while luxury safari holidays can sometimes carry a substantial price tag, escorted touring can offer another way to enjoy the experience.
Newmarket’s Mabula safari holidays are a particularly interesting option, combining game drives and time in a beautiful reserve setting.
It’s exactly the sort of experience I’d encourage couples, solo travellers and even honeymooners to consider when exploring their options.

Canada & Alaska — Spectacular Scenery on an Epic Scale
Canada is a destination that lends itself beautifully to touring.
The towering peaks of the Canadian Rockies, turquoise lakes, vast forests and breathtaking mountain scenery create an extraordinary backdrop for a journey.
And for travellers who want to experience even more, combining a Canadian Rockies itinerary with an Alaskan cruise can make for a truly memorable holiday.
Newmarket offers touring options that bring together these remarkable regions, including itineraries featuring the celebrated Rocky Mountaineer train.
For anyone who loves spectacular scenery, wildlife and the romance of great journeys, Canada and Alaska deserve a place on the wish list.
It’s Not Just About the Destination — It’s About the Right Tour
Something I always encourage travellers to consider is that not all escorted tours are the same.
Two holidays might visit many of the same places but deliver very different experiences.
The pace of the itinerary, number of travellers, accommodation, included excursions and amount of free time can all influence how much you enjoy the journey.
And personally, I think accommodation matters.
After a full day exploring a destination, I want somewhere comfortable to return to. A good night’s sleep, somewhere pleasant to relax and the chance to unwind before the next day’s adventures are important parts of the experience.
That doesn’t necessarily mean every hotel needs to be five-star.
I’ve stayed in wonderful four-star properties that have exceeded expectations, and hotels with higher star ratings that haven’t lived up to them.
What matters is finding the right balance between comfort, location, experiences and value.
Ultimately, the best tour isn’t necessarily the most expensive or the one that includes the greatest number of attractions.
It’s the one that suits you.
Why We’ve Chosen Newmarket Holidays as Our Preferred Touring Partner
At Guru Travel, we’ve always believed that the right holiday should be built around the person taking it.
For some, that’s an exceptional resort overlooking the Indian Ocean. For others, it’s an African safari, a journey through India or discovering the Canadian Rockies.
As we continue to develop our escorted touring offering, I’m delighted that Newmarket Holidays has become our preferred escorted touring partner.
Newmarket has an extensive range of escorted holidays covering destinations around the world, with itineraries designed to bring together sightseeing, experiences and the practical arrangements involved in exploring a destination.
Their breadth of choice, established reputation and range of touring styles make them a strong fit for the experiences we want to offer our customers.
And through Guru Travel, you’ll have somebody to speak to about the options before deciding which journey is right for you.
We’ll help you understand the itineraries, compare the experiences and consider the practical details that can make all the difference.
Of course, escorted touring isn’t the only way to discover the world.

The World Is Waiting — What Would You Love to Experience?
I genuinely believe that some of the greatest memories we create come from the experiences we share and the places we discover.
Not every holiday needs to be an adventure. Sometimes a beautiful beach and two weeks of doing absolutely nothing are precisely what we need.
But if there’s somewhere you’ve always dreamed of seeing, something you’ve always wanted to experience or a journey you’ve been putting off until ‘one day’, perhaps it’s time to start exploring the possibilities.
Whether that’s seeing the Taj Mahal, searching for wildlife in Costa Rica, experiencing your first African safari or travelling through the Canadian Rockies, there are extraordinary journeys waiting to be discovered.
Because ultimately, travel isn’t just about where you’ve been. It’s about the memories and moments you bring home.
